Summer Courses
In order to return to MIT, I need to take 2-3 courses and get at least a "B" in each. It's not 100% that I can return in Fall 2008 on this basis, but seemed fairly likely, and the worst case is Spring 2009.
I'm going to attend University of California at Santa Cruz for the summer, with classes in physics, math, and economics. There is the question of which classes will count for GIR credit, which will count for departmental credit, which have convenient scheduling, and which I can fairly easily get an "A" or at least a "B" in. I've taken all of the above before, but didn't receive credit, although it was a long time ago. Most of these courses are between 23 June and 15 August, although some end on the 29 August. Ideally, I'd end up with all of my "general institute requirements" completed as well, but this depends on the departments, and being grandfathered under the Class of 2000 graduation requirements.
One issue is that I get my grades at the end of each class -- for some, as late as 29 August. Then, my MIT readmission is decided. Then, I apply for financial aid. I also need to drive from California to MIT, move in, etc. Classes start as early as 3 September, with registration day on 2 September! I may also want to take Advanced Standing Exams before classes begin.
I'm trying to do between 1 and 4 startup projects (of a week or so each) this summer, plus the Defcon conference (Las Vegas), possibly Last HOPE (NYC), and maybe Burning Man (NV), plus moving back to MIT. The most likely plan is to ship my belongings, drive from California to Boston in mid-August after finals, then fly back for Burning Man (optionally), then start classes. I'd also like to get some other infrastructure set up over the summer so things are more on autopilot during the year, line up a job for during the year, and finish some other tasks (trying to retain membership in some California clubs, requiring attending thursday meetings and doing some volunteer work..) A busy summer, before 3-4 years of school!
