New blog...for real!

Hey all,

my new blog is at http://shanghaiwith.me. fun, eh? no, no www at the beginning just plain ol' shanghaiwith.me. please update your RSS feeds as necessary.

.

I look at the stars
wondering
am I alone?
Bound to be
if you couldn't keep me.
Or was it I
too close for comfort
no air
no space
feeling claustrophobic
in your tight box?
Regrets?
Not even.
Just tell me:
will it ever be the same again?

What's real good?

I just got a collection of the Boondocks (Seasons 1 & 2). So so good.

My website is going OK. I don't have a screenshot to show right now. I'm trying to keep it all sorts of standards compliant (XHTML 1.0 Transitional/Strict, CSS2, WAI/Section 508 initiatives,  etc.) so that's kind of a challenge. Luckily, I've got the Sandbox to help me. It already has the Wordpress structure in place so all I really have to do is edit the CSS (style.css). It's coming along.

The Blogenstein!

I removed this blog from my FB Note import thingy so people will actually have to come to this site or check their RSS feeds rather than seeing it on FB. I guess I want a smaller audience? No, I just want people who actually read this to come.

In other news, 69127 dead and 373612 injured or missing 3.5 weeks after the Sichuan earthquake in May. I originally thought the death count would go above 100,000 (and it might if that "injured or missing" figure doesn't convert to "healthy and found") but it looks like it will stay down for now.

Finally, working on my blog still. I've been messing around with the side bar graphic. Since the blog will have a Shanghai theme (though in reality will be a mix of personal blogging and China-related blogging), I'm really working to make the graphic elements (though not necessarily style) relevant. Here is a really really early shot of it:

 Blog Layout Alpha

As you can see, it is the Shanghai World Financial Centre. I plan to put a search box, blogroll, and categories in there. More shots to come when I finish designing the header.

Starbucks = reflection = partial guilt.

First. Did you ever pass by a Starbucks and see all the people in there enjoying their mochas and frappuccinos, idly playing with their iPhones or CrackBerries? Second. After passing by said Starbucks, did you mentally put yourself above them by telling yourself you don't have to be "with it" by being like them (i.e. sipping coffee, using an iPhone, and wearing designer T's)? Third, and finally, did you secretly give in to your need for acceptance by doing exactly the things you despise?

I guess we all give in sometimes. I try being unique by not doing what other people do. So when people think they're the crème de la crème because they're rocking the American Eagle clothing or suddenly down with latest dance-punk music, I take pride wearing Threadless or Shirt Woot and listening to my hometown hip-hop (Spank Rock). However, I sometimes have to give in. Give me a grande caramel latte, skim milk, extra hot, extra foam, double shot of caramel syrup, and a double shot of espresso. Give me a trendy but overplayed CD of Kanye West. I want to be the mainstream! I want to be popular because I'm just like everyone else!

It's weird how a single trip to Starbucks can get you reflecting on life.

Once again...

So that last blog post... funny story 'bout that. You see, I was all gung ho about it and saying to myself, "Gee, I'm sure I have enough content and determination to really get this blog going again." Well THAT didn't happen. So what now??

I'm currently waiting on GoDaddy to finish their Sunrise/Landrush event in regards to the new .me ccTLD (that's country code top level domain e.g. .us, .uk, .cn, .jp, etc). With any luck, no one else will try and claim the one I registered for and all will be well with the universe. Otherwise it gets obnoxious and I'll have to do something stupid like participate in an auction for it. In that case, I have to pay a minimum of $75 PLUS the $100 I put down for 2 year registration. Grrr....

So until July 17 (or maybe as soon as June 26), I will be using this blog. On the plus side, I have more than a month to build my blog. My plan of action is to create sliced PSD files then write the XHTML and CSS behind it. Since I'm quite inexperienced in all of this, I've found a number of great online resources in regards to WordPress (my blog app of choice) themes and such. I guess I'll also have to brush up on my PHP and MySQL skills as well. I haven't decided yet whether I want to stick with WordPress or actually build my own blog application from the ground up. It would require a good amount of MySQL work (setting up tables, fields, actions, and such). I've also looked into a RoR (Ruby on Rails) approach but that seems a little excessive. I think with a solid MySQL database and some heavy (code) lifting, I can get it done. The main thing I'm worried about is net security.

Or I can stick to WordPress and focus my time on the visual work rather than the backend. When I have some Photoshop mockups, I'll post them here.

We'll see.

new year's resolution

so last year around this time, i was enjoying myself in Shanghai, China.  At that time, I was keeping a written record of my stay there in a little black book which I had not been too good about writing in.  So, my New Year's resolution was to write in it more frequently and what do you know...I did!  This year, I'm not in China...I'm in Troy, NY.  Not nearly as much is happening at RPI as in Shanghai so I will try to write weekly or twice weekly assuming enough has happened that week which is worthy of writing about.  Let's start with the past few days:

I arrived home for winter break on December 19th.  Nothing too exciting happened that week.  Got to see some friends and visit the old high school. Christmas was uneventful though I did enjoy receiving Mr. Boston Platinum Edition.  Now I'm in San Diego, CA.  The weather is great (what do you expect from SoCal?) and the vacation is much needed.  Yesterday, I went to Disneyland for the day.  I think the lure of these kinds of parks is lost on me.  As far as amusement parks go, I'm more the Cedar Point kind of guy.  Anyway, tomorrow I think we're headed up to Venice Beach for the day.  Then...who knows?

long time no see

Apparently it's been three weeks since I last updated.  It seems like much longer.  This weekend is Columbus Day weekend so RPI is giving us a three day weekend.  Almost everyone decided it was a good chance to go home.  Personally, I think going home is for suckers but that's probably only because I live 6 hours driving from here so I can't really go home anyway.

The semester is going OK but I really can't wait til it's over.  Next semester, I'm probably taking Studio II, Intro. to Eng. Analysis, Eng. Processes, Design Culture and Society, and Chinese II.  We'll see.

three weeks in...

Well here I am, three weeks into school.  I'm taking five classes:  Intro to Differential Equations, Design Studio I, Design Innovation & Society, Chem I, and Engineering CAD.  It's going pretty well.  It's tough, but I'm getting through.  As for extracurricular activities, I've joined CASA (Chinese American Student Assoc.), Swing Dance Club, and Ballroom Dance Club.

I'm trying to do homework, study, and this at the same time so I'm gonna continue this update later.

broken pictures

hey so you might notice that ALL the photos on this blog are broken.  the reason is they're not actually uploaded on the MIT server.  rather, i had displayed pictures from my facebook photo collection.  they must have changed the URLs so now all the photos don't display.  i'm not sure if i feel like going back 10-11 months and fixing all that but if i have to, i will.

classes start on monday and now its looking like i'll drop calc 2 to take intro to differential equations.  we'll see.

now again

So I haven't written in a long time .... again.  Sorry.  Here's what's been goin' down:

- I worked at Tessco Technologies this summer as a stockboy.  I put away boxes and stuff and enjoyed myself immensely.
- I went to college orientation at RPI on July 19-21.
- I went to Los Angeles for a family wedding from August 17-20.
- I moved into college on August 22 which puts me...
- ...here at RPI.  I'm moved in, met my roommates, and took a dance class thing today. fun.

LA was pretty awesome...  Of the things I did, I walked along the sunset strip, walked along hollywood blvd, went to the Beverly Hills Hotel for a wedding,  ate at In-N-Out Burger, ate at Mel's Drive In, and went to Venice Beach.  Anyway, I took a red eye from LAX to BWI Saturday night and arrived in B-more Sunday morning.  Took Sunday to do last minute packing and drove to Troy on Monday.

So there you go.  This week is pretty busy so look for an update Friday or Saturday.  maybe sunday.  classes start monday.

leaving again

welllll....i haven't written all summer.  not that anyone reads this anyway.  you know, you could bypass your laziness and add the user madmandoo to your LiveJournal.  see?  it's easy!  there you go, easy as pie.  hell, i'll even put a link to it to show that i'm not lying.  click here. done. oh wait!  click this and it will add me automatically to your LJ friends.  wow, could it be any easier?  i don't think so.  so the next time i ask you "hey, have you read my blog lately?" i don't want to hear, "oh...wellll...i couldn't add it cus it's not a LJ blog."  no no no, you lift yourself up outta that filthy mire of laziness and check out why a certain mr. akins says, "mike doo's blog is the shiznit!! hoo boy can that boy write. dayum!"

well enough about me.  hope you folks enjoyed yourselves and look for a new update about what i've been doing this summer.  tomorrow at 5.

sweet home baltimore

well, i'm home.  got here on monday night.  my plane took off from Pudong Int'l Airport at 12:45PM monday afternoon.  Arrived in San Francisco at 8AM (PST).  My plane was delayed about 45 minutes so we didn't take off until 3PM or so.  After 5 hour, arrived in Baltimore at 11PM or so.  That makes almost 24 hours of travel.

It's wierd being back in Towson but I'm glad to be home.

the big one (going home)

OK here it is, the comprehensive update from 5/30-today.

5/30 - After school, met up with my dad and went to the old city.  Explored the old city a bit which was quite cool.  Lots of old streets with markets and shops.  This evening had dinner with dad and Philip at Guyi.  Fairly good Hunan food and definitely spicy.  After dinner, went for drinks and dessert at People's 7.  This was a cool lounge/bar and was very good.

5/31 - Had dinner at Jean Georges tonight.  Wow!  This was an amazing set menu with sea bass, beef tenderloin, and a great chocolate dessert.  Took a stroll on along the Bund after dinner.

6/1 - Had dinner with the relatives.

6/2 - Moved from Pudong to the relatives house.  After, went to KTV at Partyworld (钱柜) in Fuxing Park.  In attendance were Steven, Raffaella, Olivia, Tomoyo, Karen, and another teacher whose name I don't know.  Sang our hearts out in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and even Spanish.  After KTV, went to Zapata's for a foam party.  Loads of EF students were there.  At first, not so much foam but then lots.  I chose not to go in because it was a little too much.  Plus, I was leaving for Hong Kong the next day.  Foam party finished, went to Bi Feng Tang for late night supper.  Upon returning home, packed for HK.

6/3-6/4 - After 2.5 hrs of sleep, got up and went to the train station.  Met Olivia there.  Made our way through the crowds and waited for the train to arrive.  Boarded the train and our 28 hour ride began!  To pass the time, read, talked, slept, &c &c &c...  Arrived in Kowloon at 2PM or so.  Took us a bit to get to the hostels but we made it.  After putting our stuff away, had some drinks and eats at Starbucks (didn't eat lunch).  After that, Olivia had to take care of some things so I made some necessary phone calls.  Met up with Olivia and we wandered around Causeway Bay (铜锣湾) trying to find a bit to eat.  Ate at a place specializing in dairy products.  Wandered some more after eating.

6/5 - Had lunch with a relative of mine living in HK.  She treated us to some dim sum with a bunch of her friends.  After that, took the Star Ferry back to HK island.  In the afternoon, went to Stanley Market.  Nothing very interesting.  Ended up sitting in a coffee shop talking and reading.  Went back to Causeway Bay.  Took the Central Escalator to the Mid-Levels/SoHo for a sandwich at Archie B's.  Fine American deli.  Was disappointed, though, by the "world's longest escalator."  Definitely the "world's longest collection of short escalators and cement sidewalks."

6/6 - Went to Lantau Island today.  Saw a big Buddha and a temple.  Usual tourist sights... Went back to Central (金钟) and took a one hour boat tour of the harbor.  Had dinner at a decent sushi place in Kowloon.

6/7 - Climbed the Peak...on the Peak Tram, that is!  Nice cloudy view of Hong Kong.  Ate lunch on the Peak.  At night, a business friend of Olivia's father treated us to a very decent Italian restaurant.  For dessert, we went to Chocolux: a chocolate specialty restaurant.

6/8-6/9 - Not too much today.  Sat in Starbucks and read.  Had a last lunch with Olivia then off to the train station.  Train ride uneventful (though shorter - 25.5 hrs).  Arrived in Shanghai at 4:30pm  and went back to the relatives place to unpack.  In the evening, went to Mike's place for some pizza and watched After the Sunset.

6/10 - Met with Philip at Garden Books.  bought some last reading material and had ice cream.  had supper with the relatives.  After, packed to go home, but i'm not finished yet.

TODAY - I'm currently at school visiting with the teachers and using their computers...  Tonight, a last dinner.  I leave Shanghai at noon tomorrow.... :(

This is my last entry in China.  I arrived in the country on Sep. 8, 2005, and will leave June 12, 2006.  That's 278 days I've spent in China and it was definitely the time of my life.  Next entry in the UNITED STATES!!!!

going home

well i was in hong kong all last week.  it was fun but i think i spent too much time there.  that is to say, there isn't enough to do to fill up 5 days worth of time.  anyway, this might just be the last post of mine in china.  tomorrow is packing and last purchases.  monday is flying home....  maybe tomorrow i'll update but if not, there will be a series of long updates detailing my activities during the vast periods of time i wasn't blogging.
