FDA approves new swine flu vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration approved the new swine flu vaccine Tuesday, a long-anticipated step as the government works to start mass vaccinations next month. Limited supplies should start trickling out the first week of October -- about a week earlier than expected, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Congress. Then about 45 million doses should arrive around Oct. 15, followed by more shipments each week.

She said they'll be available at up to 90,000 sites, including schools and clinics, across the U.S. that state health departments have chosen as best at getting the shots out fast.[AP]

Obama setting up better security for computers

America has failed for too long to protect the security of its computer networks, President Barack Obama said Friday, announcing he will name a new cyber czar to press for action.

Surrounded by a slew of government officials, aides and corporate executives, Obama said the U.S. has reached a "transformational moment" when computer networks are probed and attacked millions of times a day.

He said he will soon pick the person he wants to head a new White House office of cyber security, and that person will report to the National Security Council and the National Economic Council -- a nod to his contention that the country's economic prosperity depends on cybersecurity. (AP)

But, since many forms of renewable energy are intermittent in nature, an energy storage medium or energy carrier will be needed to effectively use this energy. Many renewable technologies, such as solar, wind, etc. are available over large areas, so installations of equipment to harvest this energy will likely be distributed at various locations on the power system. Also, efficient operation of the power system will require that power and energy to supply the power system peak demand must be available when needed. In order to address these issues, Progress Energy Florida (PEF) and the Power Center for Utility Explorations (PCUE) at University of South Florida are conducting this demonstration project to combine renewable distributed generation and an advanced battery system to supply renewable energy during the power system peak. ...more

New jobless claims drop from 16-year high

New jobless claims fell more than expected last week from a 16-year high, the government said Wednesday, though they remain at elevated levels due to the slowing economy.

The Labor Department reported that initial requests for unemployment benefits fell to a seasonally adjusted 529,000 from the previous week's upwardly revised figure of 543,000. That is lower than analysts' expectations of 537,000.

Despite the improved number, initial claims remain at recessionary levels. The four-week average, which smooths out fluctuations, rose to 518,000, its highest level since January 1983, when the economy was emerging from a steep recession. [AP]

Continental to charge $15 for 1st checked bag

Continental Airlines Inc. said Friday it is charging some coach customers $15 for a first checked bag, matching a similar fee imposed by most other major U.S. carriers.

A company spokeswoman said the fee would help offset high fuel costs, which have caused Continental and other carriers to lose money this year.

The fee took effect immediately on tickets for travel in the United States and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada for travel starting on Oct. 7 or later.

FCC chief recommends OK of satellite radio deal

The proposed merger of the nation's two satellite radio broadcasters -- bogged down in the regulatory process for over a year -- has cleared a major hurdle: The Federal Communications Commission chief is recommending approval of the $3.8 billion deal.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin made his recommendation Sunday in exchange for a number of concessions, including turning 24 channels over to noncommercial and minority programming. That sets the stage for a final vote that could occur any time after Martin's recommendation is circulated among his fellow commissioners.

The provision on noncommercial and minority programming along with several others -- including a three-year price freeze for customers -- persuaded Martin to support Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.'s buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. The deal would affect millions of subscribers who pay to hear music, news, sports and talk programming, largely free from advertising, in homes and vehicles.

The other four commissioners have kept their views on the deal largely to themselves. Unlike most FCC decisions, there is no clear indication how the vote will go.

The expansion will add 30 new jobs over three years, each paying 200% of the average annual wage in unincorporated Pinellas County. Competing with Oregon and Iowa for the expansion, Pinellas County beat out Oregon and Iowa which were also competing for the expansion. FTC opens formal probe of Intel

Escalating the world's largest computer chip maker's legal woes, the Federal Trade Commission has opened a formal probe into Intel Corp.'s sales tactics.

The move is a victory for its much smaller rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Intel disclosed Friday that it has received a subpoena from the FTC for records about Intel's microprocessor sales, which dominate the world market with a roughly 80 percent share.

The FTC's two-year investigation had been considered "informal" until that point, and Intel, which is already fighting antitrust charges in the European Union and was fined this week by antitrust regulators in South Korea, said it had been cooperating.
