Obama setting up better security for computers

America has failed for too long to protect the security of its computer networks, President Barack Obama said Friday, announcing he will name a new cyber czar to press for action.

Surrounded by a slew of government officials, aides and corporate executives, Obama said the U.S. has reached a "transformational moment" when computer networks are probed and attacked millions of times a day.

He said he will soon pick the person he wants to head a new White House office of cyber security, and that person will report to the National Security Council and the National Economic Council -- a nod to his contention that the country's economic prosperity depends on cybersecurity. (AP)

CHECK POINT SHIPS FIRST SINGLE AGENT FOR ENDPOINT SECURITY

Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced it has began shipping a new version of Check Point Endpoint Security™, the first single agent for endpoint security to combine the highest-rated firewall, network access control (NAC), program control, remote access, antivirus, anti-spyware, full disk encryption and media encryption with port protection. The new release, Check Point Endpoint Security R70, features a newly enhanced and streamlined interface as well as additional tools for enterprise deployment.

By creating a single endpoint security agent with a single client interface, deploying and managing endpoint security is dramatically simplified. A single tray icon on the endpoint device makes reviewing security status and settings easier and eliminates interoperability conflicts. Consequently, Check Point Endpoint Security’s single agent and client interface reduces the time and costs associated with endpoint security.

“Rather than having to deploy and manage multiple solutions to mitigate each type of endpoint risk, Check Point Endpoint Security provides customers a single easy-to-manage endpoint security solution,” said Dr. Dorit Dor, vice president of products at Check Point. “By combining endpoint security into one comprehensive solution, Check Point eases the burden placed on security administrators.”

“Security administrators are always dealing with the challenge of having to increase network security levels in more efficient, cost effective ways,” said Joe Luciano, chief executive officer at AccessIT. “Check Point Endpoint Security solves the dilemma, by giving enterprises a solution that combines all the endpoint security they need in one solution that can be managed centrally through one console.”

Check Point Endpoint Security R70 features and benefits include:

EnterTo™ Launches Innovative New Version of Email Technology

EnterTo Inc., a provider of free hosted email services announced the release of Version 3 of its spam-free email system. Version 3 is already in use by over 15,000 private users and adds various selectable user browser interfaces as well as POP3 for other email client. In all cases the system eliminates spam without spam filters or junk folders or any ‘lost’ emails.

“It is astounding that only one in every twenty eight emails received are legitimate and the scale of the problem continues to get worse (the quarterly Sophos IT security report says spam sent to businesses reached 96.5% in the June 2008 quarter),” said Jay Fink, COO of EnterTo Inc. ”The existing industry approach of filtering out spam into junk folders is swamped, despite huge investments of human effort trying to keep spam filters up-to-date and working correctly. Users still have to check their ‘junk’ location for any false positives or else ‘lose’ emails. EnterTo has a far better solution – and it’s free to private users – financially supported by ads at the bottom of the email. We invite you to try it for yourself - free.”

EnterTo’s technological approach to eliminating spam allocates, in the background, unique email addresses to every email correspondent. Email from all these addresses ends up in the recipients single inbox and there is no need for a ‘junk’ email box. If a spam email is ever received via one of these email addresses that address is simply eliminated any legitimate user of that address is allocated a new one. Email sent to eliminated addresses simply ‘bounces’ back to the sender as a non-existent address. There are no filters to manage or update and no ‘false positives’ or ‘lost’ emails.

E-mail spam, also known as "bulk e-mail" or "junk e-mail," involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by e-mail – the key aspects are that the email is unsolicited and is sent in bulk. E-mail spam grew exponentially to over 100 billion emails per day as of April 2008. Laws against spam have been sporadically implemented but haven’t solved the problem which continues to frustrate and annoy e-mail users as it wasted their time. In cost terms lost US productivity reached $71 billion annually in 2007, $712 per employee, according to a study conducted by Nucleus Research Inc. With legal approaches unable to solve the problem the solution has been largely left to technology. Complex techniques have been implemented to filter and refuse spam based on the content of the e-mail, DNS-based blackhole lists, greylisting, spamtraps, enforcing technical requirements of e-mail (SMTP), checksumming systems to detect bulk email, and by putting some sort of cost on the sender via a proof-of-work system or a micropayment. Each method has strengths and weaknesses and each is controversial due to its weaknesses but all end up redirecting suspected spam to a ‘junk’ location. A July 2008 article in the Wall Street Journal reported that for one of their journalists, “some 46% of their ‘junk’ was legitimate messages that had been flagged as spam”. Hoover Color Selects DEACOM as Catalyst for Continued Business Growth

Deacom, Inc. announced today that Hoover Color Corporation, a supplier of iron oxide pigments for the paint and coating, building product, and plastic industries, has licensed the DEACOM Integrated Accounting and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software System. Hoover Color will implement DEACOM in place of three non-integrated software systems to support the company's accelerated growth.

Hoover Color was founded in 1923 with the purpose of providing its customers with precise pigment colors in a variety of types. Through advances in processing technology and a historic passion for color, the company has experienced steady growth over the years. In order to meet demand, the company recently underwent a major renovation and expansion project at its Hiwassee, VA, plant. Hoover Color's selection of the DEACOM System was prompted to improve upon its business processes.

"Our former software systems weren't integrated, so there was a great deal of manual entry, from our formulation process to the nightly data uploads required by our accounting system," Chief Operating Officer Chuck Hoover says. "Meeting our customers' coloring demands requires us to operate as efficiently as possible, which means we need total business integration."

The DEACOM ERP System was selected to manage all aspects of the company, including formulation and lab management, Quality Control (QC), regulatory reporting, sales order entry, purchasing, Material Requirements Planning (MRP), inventory and lot control, production, and accounting.

Hoover Color will go live on the DEACOM System in January of 2009. With one point of control, data adjustments will be updated across all departments in real-time. This access to current data will eliminate many of Hoover Color's manual processes, including its nightly data uploads.

"Product quality and consistency are just two reasons why our company has been so successful for more than 80 years. Now [with DEACOM] we will have the technology to handle both our current business requirements and those as we evolve," Hoover says.

To learn more about the DEACOM Integrated Accounting and ERP Software System or to schedule an online demonstration, call 610-971-2278 ext. 15 or visit www.deacom.net.

AmeriVault Launches Accelerated Disaster Recovery Service for iSeries (AS400, System i) Servers

AmeriVault (amerivault.com) – a recognized leader in data protection managed services, including remote online data backup, offsite recovery services, email archiving, and data lifecycle solutions – today announced the availability of an advanced, hardware-free, hosted disaster recovery service for iSeries servers (also known as AS400 or System i) that allows remote access to a virtualized recovery environment following a disaster.

Since iSeries is known for being an extremely stable and reliable system, many organizations use it for mission-critical applications that cannot withstand downtime or reboots. However, despite the importance of the data on iSeries servers, they are often neglected when it comes to data protection – particularly from a disaster recovery standpoint.

Challenges to Fast iSeries Disaster Recovery

A cornerstone of disaster recovery planning is to ensure that backup data is stored securely offsite, geographically separated from the primary systems in case of a regional disaster like a hurricane. Many SMBs, however, simply do not have the time, budget, or personnel to manage offsite data protection or to ensure proper safeguards are in place.

The most common solution for offsite data protection involves an employee transporting backup tapes to an offsite location. In this scenario, data is often unencrypted and subject to loss, theft, or damage. In addition, an employee’s home is almost never far enough away from the primary data to provide adequate data protection in the event of a regional disaster.

The second challenge for iSeries data protection is fast recovery. Even when courier services are employed to transport backup tapes to an offsite datacenter (a process that is still at risk of loss or theft), it may take several days to receive backup tapes if requested after a real disaster.

Another roadblock preventing fast recovery is the process of sourcing, purchasing, and deploying replacement iSeries servers following a disaster or server failure. This process could take a week or more because the administrator must ensure the replacement server is patched and upgraded to precisely duplicate the configuration of the primary server before recovery can begin.

Accelerated iSeries Disaster Recovery – Removing the Roadblocks

But what if all of these roadblocks were removed by a service that also improves security and reliability? AmeriVault’s new Virtual Disaster Recovery service for iSeries servers, RestartIT-VDR iSeries, does just that – while providing an offsite failover site so administrators and end users can remotely access AmeriVault’s managed, virtualized iSeries recovery environment while the primary site and systems are rebuilt.

When a server houses mission-critical data – as is often the case with iSeries servers – three, four, or more days is just too long for most businesses to wait for system availability. RestartIT-VDR for iSeries is an advanced recovery service that allows iSeries server recovery within a day. RestartIT-VDR for iSeries allows clients to remotely access AmeriVault’s virtualized iSeries environment for up to 30 days following the declaration of a disaster – for no additional charge – providing plenty of time for a company to rebuild its primary systems following a disaster.

The foundation of RestartIT-VDR for iSeries consists of online backup and virtualized standby recovery servers hosted at one of AmeriVault's secure, world-class datacenters.

Should a client encounter an outage or suffer a disaster, rapid recovery commences: the backup data is recovered to AmeriVault's standby iSeries server – all achieved remotely for the client. With iSeries' excellent compression and with Gig-E connectivity in AmeriVault’s datacenters, the recovery process to AmeriVault's recovery servers can take just a few hours. End users can then VPN-in to resume operations while the primary systems are rebuilt. Full recovery is typically achieved in 10 hours or less.

Practical & Testable Disaster Recovery for iSeries Servers

Most importantly, RestartIT-VDR for iSeries is a testable disaster recovery service. Many disaster recovery plans lack true testability or are not completely practical when a real disaster occurs.

After helping several clients recover from 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, AmeriVault realized that IT professionals - not just the businesses for which they work - needed a better solution. Protecting data safe distances offsite is the best practice – but when a real disaster strikes, it is just not feasible to ask an administrator to leave his or her family to begin recovery at the remote site. The practicality of their disaster recovery solution, then, goes right out the window.

RestartIT-VDR for iSeries not only provides remote recovery so administrators can stay with their families during a disaster, but it is also a fully testable solution. With annual testing included with the service, RestartIT-VDR for iSeries provides advanced, cost-effective disaster recovery readiness for iSeries servers.

Garmin nüvi 200W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin nüvi 200W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
This is entry-level automotive GPS from Garmin. That means it lacks "advanced" functions as FM transmitter, bluetooth connectivity or MP3 player. However, in my opinion, a stand-alone GPS unit doesn't need any of that, and certainly not at a $200+ cost.

Widescreen makes 200W/250W so much better than other 200 series models. Getting directions from the unit is the same, regardless of the screen size, but you will be able to see a lot more of what is around you as you drive with these units - places off a highway, gas stations, restaurants. It's also easier to use the touch screen, as icons are quite larger.

Comparing 200W/250W with new the 700 series clearly shows these units as entry level, but again, the price gap is huge and I believe it's simply not worth it. One might consider 770 which includes European maps over 200/250, as buying them separately is quite expensive.

Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD Player, Fantastic Sleek Player !

Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD Player
I just got my A3 and it's absolutely fantastic. The load times are fast, start-up is fast and it's an aesthetically pleasing device. Sleek new slim design, lightweight and includes non-combo edition of 300 and The Bourne Identity HD DVDs, fully packaged in red elite cases.

I also have the A2, and prefer this third generation unit but the A2 is still a solid, and great machine. The A3 upconverts DVDs beautifully, watching DisneyDVDs is great and they look amazing. Of course HD DVDs also look great, especially Troy Directors Cut, Transformers looks beyond words - just an amazing movie experience, and The Matrix is gorgeous. I also recommend Shrek the Third next week, that will be gorgeous too.

Finally, the A3 is a solid player, better load times than the A2, slightly smaller, a beautiful chassis that really compliments your HT and Toshiba REGZA or any piano finished black TVs, and a great value. I recommend it.

Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device

Amazon Kindle

Introducing Kindle™

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both "lefties" and "righties" can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

And because we know you can't judge a book by its cover, Kindle lets you download and read the beginning of books for free. This way, you can try it out—if you like it, simply buy and download with 1-Click, right from your Kindle, and continue reading. Want to try a newspaper as well? All newspaper subscriptions start with a risk-free two-week trial.

Kindle’s paperback size and expandable memory let you travel light with your library. With the freedom to download what you want, when you want, we hope you’ll never again find yourself stuck without a great read.

We're very proud to introduce Amazon Kindle and we hope you like it as much as we do.

Garmin StreetPilot c330 Refurbished GPS

Garmin StreetPilot c330 Refurbished GPS
With a simple touch screen interface, automatic route calculation to any destination, and turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions, the StreetPilot c330 GPS navigator is a powerful companion for your adventures on the road. Plus, Garmin has designed the "c-series" of car navigation units to be as simple and easy-to-use as possible-- no more intimidating features, just straightforward, basic navigation at your fingertips. Selecting a destination is as simple as a few finger-strokes, and you can choose between a three-dimensional navigation view or the more traditional "bird's eye" overhead view.
The c330 keeps track of places that you find and stores the fifty most recent finds in an easy to access list called Recent Selections, placing the most recently viewed at the top of the list. This becomes a very helpful feature if you visit the same places over and over and don't want the inconvenient of reloading the information in the unit multiple times. Although the c330 boasts distinctive and sleek styling, simplicity is the name of the game. The only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The device is secured by a suction-mount cradle that fastens to the windshield for easy portability between vehicles. Acunetix Launches Web Application Vulnerability List

Acunetix has released an RSS feed which lists known web application vulnerabilities and the specific technologies which they target. Hackers today have an ever increasing list of weaknesses in the web application structure at their disposal, which they can exploit to accomplish a wide variety of malicious tasks. In order to educate the public, Acunetix felt the need to document all vulnerabilities discovered by Acunetix WVS since its inception, and will continue to update this list with every new vulnerability found.

Hackers are constantly searching for new flaws to exploit in web applications. Most of the vulnerabilities affect all dynamic web applications whilst others are known to be dependent on specific application technologies. Whatever the case may be, it has become apparent that as web technologies progress, so do the exploits that come with them which hackers are using in order to compromise sensitive databases, thus posing a threat to the daily operation of online businesses.

Since its introduction to the market, developers at Acunetix have been gathering information on all the known web application vulnerabilities detected by the scanner. These vulnerability "signatures" also reinforce the need for the heuristic scanning capabilities of Acunetix WVS, for the detection of those exploits which have not yet been identified and tagged.

PandaLabs Reports on the Use of Famous Names as Bait to Spread Malware

Using famous names as bait to spread malware is becoming increasingly widespread. The names used normally relate to people who, for one reason or another, are currently in the news. In recent months, several names of well-known people have been used by cyber-crooks to trick users.

George Bush, the US President, appears frequently according to PandaLabs. Worms such as MSNDiablo.A, Nuwar.A and Wapplex.C all spread via email or IM in messages offering users caricatures or videos of President Bush.

A lot of malware typically employs a more seductive approach. The Piggy.A worm, for example, spread in messages claiming to offer photos of celebrities such as Carmen Electra or Britney Spears, while the Haxdoor.PL backdoor Trojan claimed to offer users pictures of Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman naked. Another worm, Mops.A, enticed users with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

"This is a typical social engineering technique. Users are persuaded to open an enticing file containing malware or to click on a link pointing to an infected file, in this case with the bait of celebrities´ pictures", explains Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs.

Music has also been used in social engineering. TelnetOn.A is one of the most notorious 'musical worms' that spreads through P2P programs. It does this by copying itself to shared folders under names such as Eminem.exe, Evanescence.exe or Linkin Park.exe. When unwary users download one of these files, instead of music they will actually be installing a copy of the worm.

It is not just celebrities that have been used by malware. Saddam Hussein and Osama Ben Laden, for example, have been used by several variants of the Bobax family in order to spread. "Even Adolf Hitler has been used by malware creators to distribute malicious code. The malware in question, Saros.C, is a worm that has also used figures such as Bill Gates or Pamela Anderson", says Corrons.

Fictional characters also make an appearance. One of the most frequently used is Harry Potter, whose name has been used to distribute worms such as Hairy.A or Harrenix.A. Even Mario Bros and Lara Croft, from the famous videogames, have recently been recruited by malicious code (RogueMario.A and Downloader.PSJ) in order to spread.

"For this reason users should be wary about seemingly attractive items that arrive via email or instant messaging, and delete these types of messages without opening files or clicking on links", advises Corrons.

MonoSphere Introduces Storage Horizon 3.4

MonoSphere has introduced Storage Horizon 3.4, a solution delivering storage capacity management capabilities to Network Appliance (NetApp) storage environments. Suited for managing large storage environments, this enterprise-class software solution provides Global 3000 companies with a unified view of current and projected storage capacity usage, giving companies the insight to develop effective storage capacity plans and maximize utilization of existing and future storage assets.

Storage Horizon has been enhanced to support NetApp Qtree, FlexVol, FlexClone, and Snapshot technologies, providing a complete solution to optimally manage the capacity of NetApp filers. It is particularly suited to managing the capacity of large environments consisting of many filers.

For Qtrees, NetApp's commonly used storage quota system, the Storage Horizon software provides the necessary analysis to help users quickly understand important issues such as when Qtree usage is over allocated, if the sum of all Qtree allocations is greater than the size of the volume, which Qtrees are forecasted to exceed critical utilization thresholds, and which Qtrees are over-provisioned.

In addition to support for Qtrees, MonoSphere also delivers new support for FlexVols, which provide the basis for NetApp's storage virtualization technology enabling capabilities such as thin provisioning. In MonoSphere's July 2007 survey of 249 senior storage professionals at mid- to large-sized companies, users indicated that the three biggest drawbacks of implementing thin provisioning technology are the increased risk of running out of storage, increased complexity, and the lack of thin provisioning management tools. A total of 77 percent of those surveyed said that a storage capacity management solution that decreased the complexity and risk of managing a thin provisioned environment would increase their use of thin provisioning. The Storage Horizon software solves these challenges for NetApp environments by providing the necessary analysis to quickly understand important issues such as which aggregates are running out of available space for non-space guaranteed storage, which are forecasted to exceed critical utilization thresholds, the size, usage and growth of both space and non-space guaranteed FlexVols; and the degree to which an aggregate is over-provisioned.

The Storage Horizon software also has been enhanced to support NetApp's Snapshot technology, which provides point-in-time copies of file systems. The Storage Horizon software provides the necessary analysis which allows users to quickly understand important issues such as if snapshot reserve is effectively sized, when the snapshot usage is greater than snapshot reserve, or when snapshot reserves are projected to run out.

Before the Storage Horizon software, capacity planning for networked storage was too complex, error-prone and manually intensive. As a result, most companies rarely implement an effective planning process, causing overall storage utilization to be at unacceptable levels. Now, the Storage Horizon software enables storage administrators to proactively plan capacity in a timely, cost effective manner, thereby enabling users to achieve much higher utilization levels, typically greater than 80 percent. The result is a dramatic improvement in storage total cost of ownership (TCO) via decreases in storage capital expenditures – as much as 50 percent – and a reduction in operational expenditures such as power, cooling and floor space. In addition, the Storage Horizon solution does not require installation of software agents on application servers, so the system deploys in hours and immediately begins collecting storage usage data.

Panda Security's Weekly Report on Viruses and Intruders

Shark 2, a Trojan creation tool, is the main subject of this week's PandaLabs report, which also covers Addon.B and MSNPoopy.A, two worms that use MSN Messenger to spread.

Shark 2 is distributed for free in various Internet forums and is very easy to use, which makes it particularly dangerous. The Trojans created with this builder could steal all kinds of confidential data from users' computers if they are not well protected.

"These Trojans pose a threat to users' privacy as cyber-crooks could activate the victim's webcam, if they have one, and watch what they are doing", explains Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs.

Shark 2 allows criminals to specify the server the Trojan must connect to, and set the Trojan to run on every system restart, show error messages or run other files. Also, the tool allows malicious users to perform specific actions for processes and services, such as stop certain services, shut down or delete the user server, etc.

Once it has infected a computer, the Trojan created by Shark 2 connects to the server the hacker has chosen and displays a screen that allows them to take various actions, including commanding the malware to steal all kinds of passwords (for instant messaging services, email, banking services, etc.).

The cyber-criminal can also run a large number of utilities on the infected computer, for example, to modify the registry or edit the host file. By doing this, they could redirect users to phishing or infected pages.

Trojans created with this tool can also take screenshots, capture audio and log keystrokes.

"Malware creators can use this tool to build Trojans capable of attacking users on several fronts, but always with the same goal: get information that they can easily turn into some kind of financial gain", states Corrons.

The first worm covered in today's report is Addon.B, a malware specimen that sends a .zip file called Foto_celular by MSN Messenger. If the user opens it and runs the file inside, they will be installing a copy of the worm on their computer.

Addon.B copies itself to all drives under the name Foto_celular.scr. Once run, this file downloads the second component of the worm, sexy.wm. This malware, in turn, connects to two web pages waiting for commands ranging from downloading other malicious codes onto the infected computer to updating itself.

MSNPoopy.A uses similar techniques to Addon.B to spread through MSN Messenger. In this case, it uses sentences like "look @ my cute new puppy :-D" or "look @ this picture of me, when I was a kid " to entice users into opening the attached file, which has names such as img1756 and is compressed in .zip format.

If the targeted user opens it and runs the file inside, they will become infected. Also, all the users in the victim's Address Book will receive the message the worm sends, with the possibility of becoming infected.

MSNPoopy.A edits the Windows Registry to ensure it is run every time the system is started up. It also tries to connect to other instant messaging channels to send out information or continue spreading.

"It shouldn't surprise anyone that cyber-crooks are increasingly using instant messaging to distribute their creations. These are services used by millions of people every day, so they make a very easy and quick way of infecting a huge number of users", explains Corrons.

PandaLabs Reports on the Danger behind IM Applications

Instant messaging has become increasingly popular lately. Programs like MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, etc, are more and more used as a means of communication among users. However, these programs can pose a threat to users due to the possibility of sharing files, folders, or even entire disk drives.

"Malware creators have found an open door in these tools to distribute their creations to an incredibly large number of computers. To this end, they use social engineering techniques to try to trick users into downloading malicious codes", explains Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs.

A message claiming to contain some photos is the most common way of spreading this type of malware. It is easy for trusting users to accept and open these files, downloading malware onto their computers.

Addon.B and MSNPoopy.A have been the latest examples of worms designed to spread through these platforms. The first one uses MSN Messenger to send out a .zip file called Foto_celular. Once the file is run by the victim, it downloads the second component of the worm, called sexy.wm. MSNPoopy.A uses texts like "look @ my cute new puppy :-D" or "look @ this picture of me, when I was a kid" to entice users into opening the attached file, which has names such as img1756 and is also compressed in .zip format.

"Another example of malware that has used this type of program is MSNDiablo.A. This specimen included a link which supposedly allowed users to view a series of animations of George W. Bush. However, the link actually downloaded a Trojan", says Corrons.

Due to the wide use of this type of malware distribution techniques, PandaLabs has prepared a series of tips for using instant messaging programs correctly.

First, do not click any links or download files that come from unknown sources. If the file or link does come from a known contact, make sure the contact is actually sending you the files and it is not some kind of automatic message generated by a malicious code. Ask the contact about the files that they wanted to send you.

Always use secure passwords. The longer the password and the more various the characters it contains, the more secure it will be. Mixing letters and numbers and using capital letters is a good way of making passwords safer.

Never reveal personal or confidential information in chats. This is particularly important in corporate environments, as a company's confidential data are a primary target for cyber-crooks. Also, if you are using a public computer, be careful to disable the automatic sign-in option. This way, we will prevent other users from having free access to your instant messaging accounts.

Entering your email address in a public place is a way to provide cyber-criminals with one more address to send spam to, as well as a possible target for their malicious codes. Be careful not to disclose your email address unnecessarily.

Finally, be particularly careful with children's usage of these programs as it is not only malware that they might be exposed to, but also they might get in contact with inappropriate or dangerous people.

NetEffect's 10Gb Ethernet Adapter for IBM BladeCenter H System

NetEffect has announced the availability of the newest member of its NE020 Family of Ethernet adapters – the 10Gb Ethernet adapter for the IBM BladeCenter H system. The dual-port NetEffect NE020BCH Mezzanine adapter enables IBM customers to meet the most challenging requirements for scale-up or scale-out environments while extending their existing investments in Ethernet standard hardware and software.

In today's data center, more IT managers are increasingly turning away from deploying and supporting multiple interconnect technologies in favor of standardizing on Ethernet-based solutions with the latest iWARP extensions ratified by the IEEE and IETF. NetEffect's 10Gb Ethernet adapters offer performance equal to, or better than, proprietary interconnects, while maintaining compliance with the ubiquitous IEEE networking standard and leveraging familiar infrastructure management tools.

NetEffect uniquely delivers high throughput and low latency with the lowest energy usage of any 10Gb Ethernet adapter available. The NE020BCH draws less than 8 watts for a dual-port adapter, significantly less than competing solutions. By dramatically reducing power consumption, NetEffect also reduces cooling requirements, providing a suitable solution for power and cooling-constrained high-density blade computing environments. Reduced power and cooling requirements allow IT managers to more fully populate a blade chassis, provide a higher return on their hardware investment, and achieve greater processing power per square foot in the data center.

The NE020 is also the first Ethernet adapter to support more than 10Gbps throughput with standard sockets-based applications while driving latency down to levels previously achieved only by costly proprietary solutions. And unlike the competition, the NetEffect NE020 Family of adapters maintains its low latency and high performance under real-world data center loads. This is achieved through the NE020's virtual pipeline architecture that incorporates the industry's first full implementation of the iWARP extensions to Ethernet, including TCP Offload, iWARP (RDMA over Ethernet) and User-level Direct Access.

Make-A-Wish Foundation Improves Network Management with WTI Power Management Solution

The Make-A-Wish Foundation can now remotely manage power to its critical servers through an in-kind donation by Western Telematic. The company donated two of its IPS-1600-D20 power management devices to the organization, giving IT staff members the ability to reboot servers and other network equipment over the Internet. When network devices lock up, the problem can often be corrected by cycling power off and on to initiate a reboot. Although this procedure is simple when the device is located in the next room, it can be troublesome and expensive if the device is located at a remote site. WTI's remote power control and reboot products provide a reliable, cost-effective way to re-start locked-up devices at remote locations.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the world's largest wish-granting charity, enriching the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its mission.

The Foundation's IT staff supports a wide variety of critical servers both at its national office in Phoenix and at a remote facility. The staff also supports 100 local workstations and provides support to the Foundation's 69 chapters nationwide.

By implementing the IPS's, the IT department is able to log into a Web-based management console and select the port of the server for which power management is needed. The IPS interface allows the administrator to assign meaningful names to the 16 individual ports so the operator can select the proper server at a glance. It also allows the administrator to assign a unique user name and password to each port to restrict access to certain devices, allowing the administrator to fine-tune power security.
